H.R. 1193 — Future in Logging Careers Act

This section establishes the short title of the Act as the “Future in Logging Careers Act.”

This section defines “timber harvesting employer” and “mechanized timber harvesting employer” under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to cover employers engaged in logging-related activities, including felling, skidding, yarding, loading, processing, transporting, unloading, road and camp construction and maintenance, and the use of specified mechanized equipment such as whole tree processors, feller-bunchers, forwarders, chippers, grinders, debarkers, skidders, yarders, bulldozers, excavators, and log loaders. It also revises the child labor exemption in section 13(c) to apply the section 12 child labor prohibitions to 16- and 17-year-old employees of timber harvesting employers and mechanized timber harvesting employers in occupations the Secretary of Labor has found to be particularly hazardous for children ages 16 or 17, except when the employer is owned or operated by the employee’s parent or a person standing in the place of a parent.
