H.R. 1616 — Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act

This section permits nurse practitioners and physician assistants, in addition to physicians, to provide the certification of medical necessity and supporting documentation required for Medicare Part B coverage of therapeutic shoes (i.e., custom-molded shoes, depth shoes, and platform inserts) for individuals with diabetes. (Thus, Medicare covers up to two shoes and three pairs of inserts per calendar year for qualified beneficiaries previously only upon a physician's certification.)
