H.R. 171 — Make Transportation Authorities Accountable and Transparent Act

This section directs the Inspector General of the Department of Transportation to audit funds provided under applicable laws—chapter 53 of title 49, United States Code, and COVID-19 relief acts including the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2020; Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act; Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021; and American Rescue Plan Act of 2021—to specified transit agencies during the five fiscal years ending before enactment of this Act. The audit must identify amounts received under each law and describe expenditures; results must be reported to Congress within 180 days after enactment. Specified transit agencies are the five entities providing public transportation (as defined in 49 U.S.C. 5302) with the most unlinked passenger trips in calendar year 2019, as reported to the National Transit Database, that received such federal funds.
