This section revises the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment, Prevention, and Intervention Demonstration Program (i.e., grants to comprehensive sickle cell disease centers and other entities to expand access to screening, treatment, counseling, and related services) as follows: (1) expands authorized purposes in multiple provisions to include prevention and treatment of complications of sickle cell disease (previously prevention and treatment of sickle cell disease); (2) authorizes awards to comprehensive sickle cell disease centers through grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements (previously contracts only); and (3) increases authorized funding to $8.205 million for each of FY2025 through FY2029 (from $4.455 million for each of FY2019 through FY2023). This section states the sense of Congress that further research should be undertaken to expand understanding of the causes of, and find cures for, heritable blood disorders, including sickle cell disease.
