H.R. 1909 — Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act of 2025

This section revises the maternal mortality review committees program (42 U.S.C. 247b-12), which provides CDC grants to states to establish multidisciplinary committees that review maternal deaths within one year to identify causes, prevent future deaths, and develop recommendations. Specifically, it (1) requires maternal mortality review committees to include obstetricians and gynecologists among clinical specialties represented; (2) replaces "as applicable" with "if available" regarding certain data sources and expands committee duties to include coordinating with death certifiers to improve death record reports and quality, including amending cause-of-death information on death certificates as appropriate; and (3) directs the CDC Director, consulting the HRSA Administrator, to disseminate best practices for preventing maternal mortality and morbidity—reflecting other federal maternal health programs—to hospitals, state professional society groups, and perinatal quality collaboratives at least once per fiscal year. This section also increases authorized funding to $100 million annually for FY2025 through 2029 (from $58 million annually for FY2019 through 2023).
