H.R. 1933 — James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal Act

This section states congressional findings on the life, military service, acting career, awards, and honors of James Earl Jones.

This section authorizes the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate to arrange for the posthumous presentation, on behalf of Congress, of a gold medal of appropriate design to James Earl Jones in recognition of his contributions to the United States and achievements in paving the way for inclusion and equal opportunities for people of all backgrounds in film and theatre. The Secretary of the Treasury must strike the medal with suitable emblems, devices, and inscriptions, including an image and the name of James Earl Jones, and following presentation, give the medal to his son, Flynn Earl Jones.

This section authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to strike and sell bronze duplicates of the gold medal authorized under section 3 at a price sufficient to cover the costs of the medals, including labor, materials, dies, use of machinery, and overhead expenses.

This section designates medals struck under this Act as (1) national medals for purposes of 31 U.S.C. chapter 51, and (2) numismatic items for purposes of 31 U.S.C. §§ 5134 and 5136. (Thus, proceeds from their production and sale deposit into the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund, a revolving fund in the Treasury that covers Mint operations including numismatic items without fiscal year limitation.)

This section authorizes the use of amounts from the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund (i.e., the Mint's revolving fund for coin and medal production) as necessary to pay the costs of medals struck under this Act and requires deposit of proceeds from the sale of duplicate bronze medals into the fund.
