H.R. 1977 — To direct the Secretary of Defense to conduct a study relating to obesity in the Armed Forces, and for other purposes.

This section directs the Director of the Defense Health Agency to improve the transparency and frequency of military obesity reports. The section also requires the Secretary of Defense to submit four reports to the congressional defense committees not later than one year after enactment of this Act, as follows: (1) results of a study on the contribution of obesity to in-service injuries, medical discharges, and associated annual costs to the Armed Forces; (2) results of a study on transforming Department of Defense food procurement processes to acquire healthier food that promotes better health outcomes; (3) results of a study on issues relating to access to healthy foods for families of Armed Forces members; and (4) an assessment of the impact on national security readiness of rising obesity levels among active-duty Armed Forces members.
