H.R. 2701 — Fallen Servicemembers Religious Heritage Restoration Act

This section sets forth six congressional findings, including that approximately 900 American-Jewish servicemembers killed in World War I and World War II were mistakenly buried under Latin crosses in overseas U.S. military cemeteries; that more than 2 million people visited such cemeteries in 2022; and that the American Battle Monuments Commission has a responsibility to correct such errors in honoring those servicemembers.

This section establishes the Fallen Servicemembers Religious Heritage Restoration Program within the American Battle Monuments Commission to identify covered members—deceased Jewish members of the Armed Forces buried in overseas U.S. military cemeteries under markers that do not indicate they were Jewish—and contact their survivors and descendants. The Commission must carry out the program during the first five fiscal years after enactment and, each year, enter into a one-year contract worth $500,000 with a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, giving priority to those with relevant expertise.
