H.R. 2916 — To authorize, ratify, and confirm the Agreement of Settlement and Compromise to Resolve the Akwesasne Mohawk Land Claim in the State of New York, and for other purposes.

This section authorizes, ratifies, and confirms (1) the Agreement of Settlement and Compromise to Resolve the Akwesasne Mohawk Land Claim in the State of New York (Settlement Agreement), entered into by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the State of New York, Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties, the Towns of Fort Covington and Bombay, and the New York Power Authority; and (2) any transfer of land, right-of-way, or easement that is the subject of claims in three specified federal lawsuits involving the Mohawk Tribe and the State of New York (Canadian St. Regis Band of Mohawk Indians v. New York, Nos. 82-CV-783 and 82-CV-1114; Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe v. New York, No. 89-CV-829).

This section designates as Indian country under 18 U.S.C. §1151(a)—subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of the settlement agreement—lands owned by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe within the settlement acquisition areas, including (1) lands owned on the effective date of the settlement agreement and (2) lands acquired thereafter.
