H.R. 2984 — ASTRO Act

This section expands the list of federal officers and employees authorized to use passenger carriers for transportation between residence and place of employment—currently limited to specified senior officials (e.g., the President, Vice President, Supreme Court justices, and certain Executive Schedule Level I officers)—to include an officer or employee returning from space prior to receiving post-flight medical clearance to operate a motor vehicle, when necessary for medical research, monitoring, diagnosis, treatment, or other official duties as approved by the NASA Administrator. The section further requires the NASA Administrator to submit annual reports to the House Committees on Science, Space, and Technology and Oversight and Accountability and the Senate Committees on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs detailing such transportation in the prior 12 months, including descriptions, names of recipients, associated costs, total instances, and total costs. No additional amounts are authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section.
