H.R. 3180 — Taiwan Representative Office Act

This section declares it to be the policy of the United States, consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act (22 U.S.C. 3301 et seq.) and the Six Assurances conveyed by President Ronald Reagan in 1982, to provide the people of Taiwan with de facto diplomatic treatment equivalent to foreign countries and to rename the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States as the Taiwan Representative Office. The section directs the Secretary of State to seek negotiations with that office to rename its office in the District of Columbia accordingly and provides that, if renamed, any reference in U.S. laws, maps, regulations, documents, or records to the prior name is deemed a reference to the new name for all official U.S. government purposes. The section states that nothing in it entails restoration of diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan) or alters the U.S. position on Taiwan's international status.
