This section directs the Director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) of the Department of Justice, in consultation with the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, to establish an online training course on Alzheimer’s disease and similar forms of dementia not later than one year after enactment of this Act. The course must cover (1) interacting with persons who have Alzheimer’s disease or a similar form of dementia, (2) recognizing behavioral symptoms and characteristics of such conditions, (3) effectively communicating with affected persons, (4) using alternatives to physical restraints, and (5) identifying signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. The COPS Office Director must recommend that applicable state departments and agencies count course completion toward required continuing education or appointment hours for law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and correctional probation officers.
