This section establishes a prohibition on discrimination in the Armed Forces on the basis of gender identity (including a diagnosis or potential diagnosis of gender dysphoria). It bars the Secretary concerned from (1) prescribing qualifications for service, (2) involuntarily separating a member, (3) denying medically necessary health care coverage to a member, (4) requiring an individual to serve in the sex assigned at birth, (5) denying accession, reenlistment, or continuation of service, or (6) otherwise discriminating against a member. The section defines gender identity as an individual's gender-related identity, appearance, mannerisms, or other gender-related characteristics, regardless of the individual's designated sex at birth.
