This section increases criminal penalties for forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, or interfering with federal officers or employees (i.e., persons designated in 18 U.S.C. 1114) or former such persons while engaged in, or on account of, official duties. (1) In subsection (a), it sets the fine for simple assault at up to $200,000 (from under this title) and the maximum imprisonment at 2 years (from 1 year) for simple assault, or 10 years (from 8 years) where the acts involve physical contact with the victim or intent to commit another felony. (2) In subsection (b), it expands the definition of deadly or dangerous weapon to explicitly include explosive materials (as defined in 18 U.S.C. 841); sets the fine at up to $500,000, notwithstanding 18 U.S.C. 3571 (from under this title); and increases the maximum imprisonment to 25 years (from 20 years).
