H.R. 4268 — Remembering Our Local Heroes Act

This section directs the Secretary of the Interior to establish, not later than six months after enactment, a grant program to fund construction, restoration, renovation, and maintenance of covered memorials. Covered memorials include statues, monuments, sculptures, plaques, inscriptions, or similar structures or landscape features (e.g., gardens or memorial groves) owned or administered by units of local government or nonprofits that perpetuate the memory of veterans who served on or after April 6, 1917; Armed Forces members killed in the line of duty on or after that date; law enforcement officers; or firefighters (excluding those inside structures or where the structure is primarily used for other purposes). Grants may be awarded to units of local government—including cities, counties, tribes, territories, and the District of Columbia—and nonprofits, with priority for projects demonstrating strong local support and memorializing individuals or groups for exemplary public service or life-risking bravery. No more than one grant may be awarded per fiscal year per entity or covered memorial, with amounts not to exceed $100,000 and requiring 50% non-Federal matching funds (including in-kind contributions). $2 million is authorized for each of FY2026 through FY2030.
