This section authorizes individuals entitled to veterans educational assistance under chapters 30, 32, 33, 34, or 35 of title 38, U.S. Code—or other specified laws—to use such assistance to cover costs of covered examinations and assessments for credit toward degrees awarded by institutions of higher learning (IHLs) in approved programs of education. Covered examinations and assessments include (1) DANTES Subject Standardized Test Program (DSST) examinations, (2) College Level Examination Program (CLEP) examinations, (3) National Career Readiness Certificate examinations, (4) other similar examinations designated by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and (5) IHL assessments of student portfolios or narratives demonstrating prior military training or learning. Assistance is limited to the lesser of the actual cost or $500, with entitlement charged as the cost divided by the individual's monthly benefit rate under the applicable program; such a charge against VA-administered entitlement does not affect Department of Defense educational assistance entitlement (e.g., Tuition Assistance Program).
