H.R. 4608 — Francis G. Newlands Memorial Removal Act

This section directs the Secretary of the Interior to remove from the memorial fountain at Chevy Chase Circle, Connecticut Avenue and Western Avenue NW, in the District of Columbia—(1) the brass plaque bearing the name “Senator Francis G. Newlands” from the grounds; (2) the stone, tablet-like projection bearing the name “Francis Griffith Newlands” and a related inscription from the south end of the fountain’s face; and (3) the name “Newlands” carved into the upper face of the fountain’s coping stones (by removal or permanent concealment). It further requires the Secretary to offer the removed items to the descendants of Francis Griffith Newlands for 60 days and, if unclaimed, to maintain them as federal property accessioned into the Rock Creek Park museum collection.
