H.R. 485 — Muhammad Ali Congressional Gold Medal Act

This section states congressional findings on the life, athletic achievements, civil rights advocacy, humanitarian efforts, diplomatic roles, and public recognitions of Muhammad Ali.

This section authorizes the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate to arrange for the presentation, on behalf of Congress, of a gold medal of appropriate design to Muhammad Ali in recognition of his contributions to the United States (Congress's highest civilian honor). The Secretary of the Treasury must strike the medal with suitable emblems, devices, and inscriptions, which is then given to Ali's wife, Lonnie Ali, following presentation.

This section authorizes the Secretary to strike and sell bronze duplicates of the gold medal authorized under section 3 at a price sufficient to cover the cost of the medals, including labor, materials, dies, use of machinery, and overhead expenses.

This section (1) designates medals struck under this Act as national medals for purposes of chapter 51 of title 31, United States Code, and (2) designates such medals as numismatic items for purposes of sections 5134 and 5136 of title 31, United States Code. (Thus, the U.S. Mint is authorized to produce the medals and sell them as official numismatic products.)

This section authorizes the use of amounts from the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund, as necessary, to pay the costs of medals struck under this Act and requires deposit of proceeds from the sale of duplicate bronze medals authorized under section 4 into that fund.
