This section authorizes the Attorney General, acting through the Director of the National Institute of Justice, to carry out a pilot program making 3 to 5 grants to eligible entities (i.e., small business concerns, as defined in 15 U.S.C. 632, with fewer than 500 employees) to develop and commercialize gun safety technology (i.e., technology designed to reduce accidental or unauthorized gun use, including smart guns and personalized locking devices). Grantees must submit applications describing their commitment and initial product design and report progress on milestones such as building prototypes, conducting reliability testing, planning trial production, and preparing for commercialization. The section authorizes $10 million for the program in FY2026.
