H.R. 5066 — Safe Students Act

This section repeals the prohibition on knowingly possessing a firearm in a school zone (18 U.S.C. §922(q)). (As background, that provision generally banned firearms on school grounds or within 1,000 feet thereof for K-12 public or private schools, subject to exceptions for law enforcement, licensed individuals, and certain lawful transport.) It also (1) strikes related definitions from 18 U.S.C. §921(a)(25)-(27); (2) eliminates cross-references to §922(q) and related penalties from 18 U.S.C. §924(a); and (3) repeals the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 (P.L. 101-647, §1702). (Thus, no federal prohibition remains on firearms in school zones.)
