H.R. 527 — Strengthening Wildfire Resiliency Through Satellites Act of 2025

This section establishes a competitive grant program, to be administered by the Secretary of the Interior acting through the Director of the United States Geological Survey, under which the Secretary must award at least three grants to eligible entities (i.e., State foresters, emergency managers, or equivalent State officials) not later than one year after enactment of this section. Grants must fund the purchase and integration, through public-private partnerships, of high-resolution multi- and hyper-spectral satellite imaging capabilities (i.e., visible, near-infrared, shortwave infrared, thermal infrared, and radar data) and the use of such data to detect, assess, respond to, and manage wildfires, including monitoring active fire behavior, burned area, intensity, and severity; ensuring prescribed fire safety and effectiveness; and guiding post-fire risk assessment and recovery. The section authorizes $20 million for the program for each of FY2026 through FY2028 and requires the Secretary to submit a report to Congress by the end of the second fiscal year after enactment detailing grant applications received and awards made, the program's impact on wildfire prevention, recommendations for establishing it as a long-term program, and other effectiveness metrics.
