H.R. 5285 — TWISTER Act

This section expands the goals of the tornado warning improvement and extension program—established by the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, in collaboration with the weather industry and academic partners, to reduce loss of life and economic losses from tornadoes through improved forecasts, predictions, and warnings—to require the development of innovative tornado forecasts, predictions, and warnings with a particular focus on (1) fast-developing storm systems, such as derechos; (2) areas historically absent of tornadoes; and (3) evening or nighttime tornadoes.
