H.R. 5377 — Rural Health Training Opportunities Act

This section establishes requirements for grants under the health professions workforce demonstration program (i.e., grants to provide low-income individuals with education, training, and career advancement opportunities in high-demand health care occupations). Specifically, it (1) directs the Secretary to give preference, when awarding grants, to applications for projects serving rural areas (i.e., where enrollees reside, projects are conducted, or hiring employer partners are located); (2) requires funded projects to include a transportation assistance plan for participants (i.e., referrals to or enrollment assistance in subsidized programs, or direct payments for public transit or personal vehicle gasoline if transit is unavailable); and (3) directs the Secretary to submit a report to the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee during each Congress on grant applications received and awarded (including rural-preference applications) and the effectiveness of projects in addressing rural health workforce shortages or in-demand jobs.
