This section authorizes the Director of the National Science Foundation to make merit-reviewed, competitive awards to institutions of higher education or nonprofit organizations (or consortia thereof) to support research activities developing K-12 curricula, instructional materials, teacher professional development, and evaluation methods for AI literacy (i.e., age-appropriate knowledge and ability to use artificial intelligence effectively, critically interpret outputs, solve problems in an AI-enabled world, and mitigate risks). Award funds may support (1) formal and informal K-12 curriculum development that is learner-centered and project-based; (2) professional learning opportunities for state and local educational agencies, superintendents, principals, educators, or school leaders to enhance AI literacy and proficiency, promote responsible AI use, and develop best practices; (3) AI literacy evaluation tools and resources; (4) professional development courses and experiences, including mentoring, that integrate in-person, virtual, and distance learning; (5) hands-on learning tools; (6) augmenting existing curricula to incorporate AI literacy and responsible use; and (7) other activities determined appropriate by the Director.
