H.R. 5872 — Medical License Verification Act

This section requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services, not later than 30 days after the date of enactment, to establish and implement an automated system to verify whether a health care provider (i.e., a person described in section 1172(a)(3) of the Social Security Act) applying for a unique health identifier claims to be licensed in a state is actually licensed in that state and that such license is in good standing before issuing the identifier. (Unique health identifiers, known as National Provider Identifiers or NPIs, are required under HIPAA administrative simplification provisions for covered health care providers engaging in standard electronic transactions.)
