This section revises officer election requirements in §401 of the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 (29 U.S.C. 481) by (1) requiring national and international labor organizations (except federations) to elect officers by secret ballot among members in good standing every five years, eliminating the prior option of election at a convention of delegates chosen by secret ballot; and (2) requiring officers of intermediate bodies (e.g., general committees, system boards, joint boards, joint councils) to be elected by secret ballot among members every three years, eliminating the prior option of election by labor organization officers representative of such members who have been elected by secret ballot. The amendments take effect 18 months after enactment.
