H.R. 614 — SAFE Grilling Act

This section states congressional findings, citing 2017-2021 data from the National Fire Protection Association and Consumer Product Safety Commission, that (1) an average of 22,155 individuals each year went to an emergency room due to injuries involving grills; (2) gas grills were involved in an average of 9,079 home fires each year, including 4,454 structure fires and 4,625 outdoor fires; (3) leaks or breaks caused 6% of structure fires and 15% of outdoor fires related to gas grills; (4) more than 25% of structure fires related to grills began on an exterior balcony or open porch, 8% began when an outside wall caught fire, and 4% began with a structural member or framing; (5) July accounted for 16% of grill-related fires, followed by June (14%), May (12%), and August (11%); and (6) uncleaned grills were involved in roughly 20% of such fires.

This section requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission to develop and implement, not later than one year after enactment, a public awareness campaign educating the public on dangers associated with grill cooking and best practices to prevent injuries and fires, and authorizes $5,000,000 for this purpose.
