This section establishes a statutory definition of short-term limited duration insurance under the Public Health Service Act as health insurance coverage provided pursuant to a contract that has an initial expiration date less than 12 months after the original effective date and a total duration of not more than three years (including renewals or extensions). (Short-term limited duration insurance is exempt from many Affordable Care Act consumer protections applicable to nongrandfathered health insurance coverage in the individual and group markets, including requirements for essential health benefits, guaranteed renewability, and prohibitions on preexisting condition exclusions.)
