H.R. 6375 — 21st Century STEM for Girls and Underrepresented Minorities Act

This section establishes a competitive grant program under which the Secretary of Education, beginning not later than 90 days after enactment, awards grants to qualified local educational agencies to carry out specified STEM education activities for girls and underrepresented minorities in grades kindergarten through 12. Grants are for four years at $250,000 per year; require applications describing program design, school collaboration, recruitment, and activities; give priority to applicants partnering with organizations experienced in increasing participation of such students in STEM; and must supplement, not supplant, other non-federal funds, with annual evaluations required. Authorized activities include (1) career preparation and parent education; (2) tutoring, mentoring, and role model exposure; (3) after-school, summer, and internship programs (covering up to 50% of internship costs); (4) materials and equipment purchases; (5) field trips and academic advising; and (6) teacher professional development on bias elimination and student encouragement.
