H.R. 7204 — School Bus Stop-Arm Safety Camera Act

This section requires the Administrators of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to conduct a study on the benefits of requiring school buses to be equipped with stop-arm safety cameras (i.e., devices that photograph vehicles illegally passing a stopped school bus) and, not later than one year after enactment, to publish findings and recommendations on best practices for data management and privacy safeguards, data sharing with law enforcement, and fee and revenue sharing structures. The section further directs the Secretary of Transportation to establish, not later than 18 months after enactment, a grant program under which state educational agencies—as defined in section 8101 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 7801)—may receive grants to purchase school buses equipped with such cameras, equip existing school buses with the technology, or install, maintain, and repair it.
