H.R. 7701 — Public Housing Rent Reduction for First Responders Act

This section modifies rent requirements for families residing in public housing units assisted under the U.S. Housing Act of 1937 by expanding an existing exception in paragraph (4) to cover families with one or more full-time police officers, firefighters, or emergency medical technicians (previously, police officers only) and establishing reduced rent for such families as the highest of 15% of monthly adjusted income or 5% of monthly income (from the standard highest of 30% of monthly adjusted income or 10% of monthly income under paragraph (1)). (As background, public housing serves low-income families who generally pay income-based rent rounded to the nearest dollar.) It further defines firefighters and emergency medical technicians as full-time employees of federal, state, local, or tribal fire departments or emergency medical services responder units, as determined by the public housing agency.
