H.R. 7804 — BLS Act

This section revises duties of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)—which collects, collates, and reports full statistics on labor conditions, employment volumes and changes, wages, and hours across industries, governments, and geographic areas—under 29 U.S.C. 2 and 8, as follows: (1) requires the Secretary of Labor to collate such statistics (previously permissive "may collate"); (2) requires public online reporting of specified employment statistics by the first Friday of each month, in accordance with 29 U.S.C. 8; and (3) requires inclusion in each such labor statistics report of unemployment data disaggregated by geography, race, ethnicity, and gender. The section further modernizes statutory terms in 29 U.S.C. 2 by replacing gender-specific language ("his," "him," "he") with gender-neutral language ("the Secretary") and by updating the first sentence to require public reporting "at least once each year, or more frequently" (previously "at least once each year, or oftener") and "provided for the Department of Labor" (previously "provided for his department"). Finally, this section directs the Law Revision Counsel to designate the heading of 29 U.S.C. 8 as "Unemployment data relating to individual demographics."
