“To extend eligibility for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) for new moms, and for other purposes.”
No CRS summary available for this bill.
This section extends eligibility durations under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)—which provides supplemental foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support to at-risk pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and young children from low-income families—by (1) increasing the postpartum period to 24 months (from 6 months) and (2) increasing the breastfeeding period to 24 months (from 1 year). The section further requires the Secretary of Agriculture to submit to Congress, not later than two years after enactment, a report evaluating the effects of these changes on maternal and infant health outcomes (including racial and ethnic disparities), breastfeeding rates among postpartum individuals, family experiences in WIC, and other relevant information; and defines "postpartum" as the one-year period beginning on the last day of pregnancy.
