H.R. 8282 — Rabbi Michoel Ber Weissmandl Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2026

This section states 13 congressional findings concerning Rabbi Michoel Ber Weissmandl's life (born October 25, 1903, in Hungary), his leadership in Slovakia's Jewish community and Yeshiva of Nitra, his role in the underground "Working Group" that raised funds to delay deportations and documented the Auschwitz Protocols, his advocacy for Allied bombing of rail lines to concentration camps, and his postwar establishment of the Yeshiva of Nitra in Mount Kisco, New York—the first such U.S. campus for Holocaust survivors.

This section authorizes the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate to present a Congressional Gold Medal of appropriate design to Rabbi Michoel Ber Weissmandl in recognition of his acts of valor during World War II, with the Weissmandl Committee permitted to accept the medal on his behalf. The section directs the Secretary of the Treasury to strike the medal with suitable emblems, devices, and inscriptions and requires the medal, following presentation, to be given to Samuel Dovid Weissmandl or, if he is not present, to Rabbi Menachem Meir Weissmandl.

This section authorizes the Secretary, under regulations prescribed by the Secretary, to strike and sell bronze duplicates of the gold medal struck pursuant to section 3 at a price sufficient to cover the cost of the bronze medals (including labor, materials, dies, use of machinery, and overhead expenses) and the cost of the gold medal.

This section designates the gold medal struck under this Act as a national medal for purposes of chapter 51 of title 31, United States Code, and classifies all medals struck under this Act as numismatic items for purposes of sections 5134 and 5136 of such title. (Thus, authorizing the U.S. Mint to produce and sell bronze duplicates to the public, with proceeds deposited as offsetting receipts in the general fund of the Treasury.)
