H.R. 926 — Fort Pillow National Battlefield Park Study Act

This section states congressional findings on the historical significance of Fort Pillow in Henning, Tennessee, including its construction by Confederate forces in 1861, the April 12, 1864, battle and massacre of Union troops (including 262 United States Colored Troops out of a 557-member garrison), the site's role in motivating 209,147 U.S.C.T. who contributed to the Union's victory, and its current designation as Fort Pillow Historic State Park (1,642 acres, with a Civil War museum, hiking trail, camping ground, and picnic area), a National Register of Historic Places listing (1973), and National Historic Landmark (1974).

This section directs the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a special resource study of Fort Pillow Historic State Park in Henning, Tennessee—which preserves American Civil War history, including the Massacre at Fort Pillow—to (1) evaluate the site's national significance and (2) determine the suitability and feasibility of designating it as a unit of the National Park System.
