H.Res. 1086 — Recognizing the historical significance of the Clotilda, condemning the United States role in the Atlantic slave trade, and acknowledging its lasting impact on African Americans.

This section recognizes (1) the 110 enslaved Africans aboard the Clotilda brought illegally to the United States in 1860; (2) the descendants of those Africans and their ongoing impacts from this crime; (3) the Clotilda as the last known slave ship to arrive in the United States; and (4) the enduring legacy of the Atlantic slave trade, including harm to African American families, communities, and cultural continuity. The section condemns (5) U.S. participation in the transatlantic slave trade through legal, political, and economic institutions; affirms (6) the cultural and historical importance of Africatown and communities founded by Clotilda descendants, and urges their preservation; and (7) encourages the Architect of the Capitol to consider establishing a memorial on Capitol Grounds to honor the Clotilda and all victims of the Atlantic slave trade.
