This section recognizes the 80th anniversary of the amphibious landing on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima that began on February 19, 1945, and ended on March 26, 1945; commemorates the flag raisings on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945; honors the U.S. Marines, sailors, soldiers, Army air crew, Coast Guardsmen, and Japanese soldiers who fought in the battle; remembers those who died; recognizes the Allied victory led by the U.S. Marine Corps; affirms Admiral Chester Nimitz’s statement that uncommon valor was a common virtue; reaffirms U.S.-Japan friendship; encourages appropriate commemorative programs, ceremonies, and activities; and honors the service of current U.S. servicemembers.
