H.Res. 894 — Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that strong public education in United States history and civics is essential to preserving the Nation's founding ideals on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the United States.

This section expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that (1) strong history and civics education in schools is essential to preserving U.S. founding ideals of liberty, equality, and self-government; (2) the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence provides an opportunity to strengthen civic knowledge, patriotism, and understanding of the American story; (3) states, territories, Indian Tribes, and local educational agencies should provide age-appropriate, fact-based instruction on the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and key leaders such as George Washington; (4) voluntary partnerships among public schools, museums, libraries, historic sites (e.g., Mount Vernon), veteran and civic organizations, and educational media producers should be supported to help students understand U.S. founding and institutions; (5) the work of teachers, historians, and educational professionals in producing materials on founding principles and citizenship responsibilities should be recognized; and (6) all U.S. citizens, especially young people, should study and reflect on founding leaders and ordinary citizens who secured independence, striving to embody ideals of duty, integrity, public service, and country above self.
