S. 1042 — Smoke Exposure Research Act

This section directs the Secretary of Agriculture, acting through the Administrator of the Agricultural Research Service, to conduct research on wildfire smoke exposure in wine grapes—including identifying smoke taint compounds, establishing standard sampling and testing methodologies (including fast and inexpensive screening methods), creating a database of natural background levels of those compounds, developing risk assessment tools and mitigation methods, and studying barrier compounds—in coordination with land-grant colleges and universities in California, Oregon, and Washington that have relevant expertise in viticulture and enology. The section authorizes $6.5 million for each of FY2026 through FY2030, to remain available until expended.
