S. 1061 — Forest Service Accountability Act

This section establishes the Chief of the Forest Service as a position appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate (previously appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture). It (1) requires the appointee to have substantial experience and demonstrated competence in forest and natural resources management; (2) directs joint referral of nominations to the Senate Committees on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry and Energy and Natural Resources, as a Senate rule; and (3) requires the President to submit a nomination within 30 days of enactment, notwithstanding service by any incumbent.
