S. 111 — Red Snapper Act of 2025

This section prohibits the Secretary of Commerce from issuing an interim or final rule or Secretarial Amendment that includes an area or bottom closure in the South Atlantic for species managed under the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region until (1) the South Atlantic Great Red Snapper Count study—into which $8.7 million has been invested over the last three fiscal years, including $3.3 million specifically for the count—is complete; and (2) data from that study is integrated into the first subsequent Southeast Data, Assessment, and Review (SEDAR) stock assessment for South Atlantic red snapper. (Thus, this delays potential closures to allow incorporation of independent survey data estimating red snapper abundance from North Carolina to Florida, amid findings of record-high stock abundance and concerns over economic impacts to the recreational and commercial snapper-grouper fishery.)
