S. 1212 — LOCAL Foods Act of 2025

This section revises the exemption from federal meat inspection requirements for personal slaughtering to allow any partial or full owner of animals (previously limited to animals of the owner's own raising) to slaughter such animals or prepare or transport the resulting carcasses, parts, meat, or meat food products exclusively for use by the owner, the owner's household, nonpaying guests, or employees. It further conditions the exemption on the owner maintaining custody and specific identification of such products if designating an agent to assist, as determined by the Secretary. (Thus, the change expands access for livestock owners while adding safeguards against commingling with inspected meat destined for commerce.)
