S. 1230 — SAFETY Act of 2025

This section amends the definitions section of the Agricultural Trade Act of 1978 by adding a definition of "common name" for agricultural commodities and food products—generally a name ordinarily used on packaging or labels and consistent with Codex Alimentarius standards, with examples including cheeses such as Asiago, Feta, and Parmesan; wine varietals and terms such as Chateau; and beer styles such as India Pale Ale and Stout—and by expanding the definition of "unfair trade practice" to include any foreign prohibition or disallowance of common names for U.S. agricultural commodities or food products. The section further directs the Secretary of Agriculture, in coordination with the U.S. Trade Representative, to negotiate bilateral, plurilateral, or multilateral agreements or similar instruments to secure the use of common names for U.S. products in foreign markets and to provide semi-annual briefings to the Senate Committees on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry and Finance and the House Committees on Agriculture and Ways and Means.
