S. 1256 — Fire Island AIDS Memorial Establishment Act

This section states the purposes of the Act: (1) to honor and remember residents of Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove, New York, who suffered and died from the AIDS epidemic; and (2) to educate future generations about the AIDS epidemic and its impact on those Fire Island communities.

This section defines, for purposes of the Act, the terms "Foundation" (i.e., the Pines Foundation, a tax-exempt organization affiliated with the Fire Island Pines Property Owners’ Association), "Memorial" (i.e., the Fire Island AIDS Memorial authorized under section 4(a)), and "Secretary" (i.e., the Secretary of the Interior).

This section authorizes the Foundation to establish and maintain the Fire Island AIDS Memorial within Fire Island National Seashore (a National Park Service unit on Long Island, New York) to honor Fire Island residents who died of AIDS, subject to the Secretary of the Interior's approval of its design and location and any other terms and conditions deemed appropriate. The section prohibits the use of federal funds to design, procure, prepare, install, or maintain the memorial.
