S. 1666 — Improving Social Security’s Service to Victims of Identity Theft Act

This section establishes a single point of contact at the Social Security Administration for individuals whose Social Security account number has been misused—such as to fraudulently obtain benefits under Titles II (Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance), VIII (special benefits for certain World War II veterans), or XVI (Supplemental Security Income) or in a manner affecting SSA records or prompting a new account number request—or whose Social Security card was lost in transmission. The single point of contact, consisting of a team or subset of specially trained employees, tracks the case to completion, coordinates with other SSA units for resolution, ensures accountability, and maintains continuity of records and notifications to the individual even if team members change; the requirement takes effect 180 days after enactment.
