S. 2179 — Canyon’s Law

This section states congressional findings on the risks of sodium cyanide, a highly toxic pesticide used in M-44 devices (cyanide bombs) to kill predators such as coyotes, foxes, and wild dogs, including its classification as a Category One acute toxicant; documented exposures injuring at least 42 people since 1984 (including children and fatalities); deaths of over 50 family dogs since 1990 and thousands of nontarget wildlife (e.g., bald eagles, gray wolves, grizzly bears, endangered species); and a 53% efficacy rate against targets.

This section prohibits preparing, placing, installing, setting, deploying, or otherwise using an M–44 device (i.e., a device designed to propel sodium cyanide when triggered by an animal, commonly known as an M–44 ejector device or M–44 predator control device) on public land (i.e., federal land managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, or Forest Service). It further requires any federal, state, or county agency to remove all such devices from public land within 30 days of enactment.
