This section provides Medicare Part B coverage for fall prevention items—defined in new subsection 1861(nnn) to include grab bars, non-slip mats, shower chairs, bed rails, and other items specified by the Secretary of Health and Human Services—by expanding the definition of covered durable medical equipment in subsection 1861(n), provided such items are prescribed by a physician or qualified practitioner (as described in section 1842(b)(18)(C)). It modifies the general exclusion from Medicare coverage in section 1862(a)(1) to apply to fall prevention items only if not so prescribed. The section exempts payments for such items from sequestration under the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985, the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2010, or similar laws. The amendments apply beginning 60 days after enactment.
