This section establishes the Implementing a Maternal health and PRegnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone Initiative (IMPROVE Initiative) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to advance research on reducing preventable maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity (SMM), addressing related health disparities in disproportionately affected populations (e.g., certain racial and ethnic groups), and improving health outcomes for pregnant and postpartum women. The Initiative uses an integrated approach to study biological, behavioral, and other factors contributing to maternal mortality and SMM; targets disparities through community-based interventions and identification of risk factors and biological mechanisms; and authorizes appropriations of $73,400,000 for each of FY2026 through FY2031.
