S. 3340 — 21st Century STEM for Girls and Underrepresented Minorities Act

This section establishes a competitive grant program in a new Part G of Title IV of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 under which the Secretary of Education, beginning 90 days after enactment, awards grants to qualified local educational agencies to carry out STEM education activities for girls and underrepresented minorities in grades kindergarten through 12. Grants are for four years at $250,000 per year; must supplement, not supplant, non-federal funds; and may support activities such as (1) career preparation and parent education and engagement, (2) tutoring, mentoring, after-school and summer programs, (3) exposure to role models and field trips, (4) advanced course advising, (5) up to 50% of internship costs, (6) purchase of instructional materials and equipment, and (7) teacher professional development on bias elimination and student encouragement. The Secretary gives priority to applicants partnering with organizations experienced in increasing participation of girls and underrepresented minorities in STEM fields.
