S. 3475 — A bill to authorize, ratify, and confirm the Agreement of Settlement and Compromise to Resolve the Akwesasne Mohawk Land Claim in the State of New York, and for other purposes.

This section authorizes, ratifies, and confirms (1) the Agreement of Settlement and Compromise to Resolve the Akwesasne Mohawk Land Claim in New York (Settlement Agreement) entered into by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, State of New York, Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties, Towns of Fort Covington and Bombay, and New York Power Authority; and (2) any transfer of land, right-of-way, or easement that is the subject of claims in three specified lawsuits (Canadian Saint Regis Band of Mohawk Indians v. New York et al., 82-CV-783 and 82-CV-1114; and Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe et al. v. State of New York et al., 89-CV-829).

This section designates as Indian Country under 18 U.S.C. §1151(a)—subject to the terms, conditions, and limitations of the Settlement Agreement—lands owned by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe within the settlement acquisition areas (as defined in the Settlement Agreement), including both land owned on the agreement's effective date and land acquired thereafter.
